How Long Have You Been In The Industry And How Did You Get Started?
I became licensed in 2002 after having worked in various support roles in the Industry since 1997. The more I learned about the business the more I knew that I was perfectly suited to a career in real estate because it allows me to use so many different sets of skills. It is a different job every day.
What Are Some Of The Things You Enjoy Most About Working In Your Industry?
There are those wonderful moments when everything comes together and the client is thrilled with the outcome – very rewarding. I also enjoy the flexibility of having a career where constantly evolving technology allows me some freedom and occasionally I can wrap up a deal from a ski hill, a beach or during a pit stop on a motorcycle trip.
What Are The Particular Challenges Of Working In Your Part of The Country?
I think my personal challenge is a global versus regional one in that it is frustrating to work on deals with colleagues who don’t necessarily subscribe to the save vision of putting the client first. It’s tough when I can’t go to the other guy’s client and say, “gosh I’m sorry you got sold down the river, give me a call if you need someone in your corner next time”. I don’t mean to sound cocky. The vast majority of our profession is comprised of caring, competent people, and it is the small minority who put their own needs first who just can’t survive. Unfortunately in the process of the crash and burn, innocent people get hurt and our profession is tarnished at times.
What Do You Like Doing In Your Spare Time?
Spare time.... an interesting concept. Two teens at home and one away at college who keeps in touch for cash makes our household a hub of activity. I like being involved in my small community. I travel the Province with my daughter’s rep soccer team. Living with Lupus slows me down a little at times, and I use the forced down time to read fiction, and biographies of inspirational people, and to pursue my passion for writing. The ultimate in spare time is waking up to a gorgeous day, a calendar light with appointments, and hitting the road on my motorcycle.
What Person In Your Life, Either Someone You Know Or A Public Figure) Has Most Inspired You And Why?
Three people: My sister in law Sara Jane is battling breast cancer at the ripe young age of 37. I watch her manage her battle; gathering information, processing, and then putting her plan into action. My brother Matthew, stretched about as thin as one could imagine being possible; juggling a career, managing 3 children under the age of 10 and being Sara Jane’s rock. And he makes it look effortless. Vivian Risi. I could not be more proud than to be associated with one of the most successful self made women I have ever known. Yet she is down to earth, approachable, and rather than just enjoying her monumental success, dedicates countless hours and resources to raising funds and awareness for causes which support people in need. Most notable to me at least is her commitment to Yellow Brick House – a shelter for victims of domestic violence, and her ongoing support of the Lupus Foundation.
What Characteristics Do You Think You Have That Make You Successful In Your Business?
I keep getting back up. When 2008 happened and a paycheque took 7 months to materialize – I kept doing what I do best. Real Estate. Eventually doing all the right things paid off and the train slowly started rolling again! When my illness just about won permanently, I finished the final phase of my real estate course with a chemo needle in my arm. I just keep getting back up. The alternative to getting back up doesn’t seem terribly viable, or fun for that matter!
What Are the Top Three Things That Separate You From Your Competition?
I can’t speak for my competition. I can only talk about what I do and why I do it, and people can draw their own conclusions about whether it separates me to the point that I become their Realtor of choice. First, in my business the buck stops with me. Period. A mistake is never the support staff’s fault, or a computer glitch, or whatever. If something happens that needs to be made right it is up to me to get it done. Second, I love what I do – it’s empowering to enable people realize their dreams of home ownership. Who wants to deal with someone who is putting in time or just trying to get something done with the solitary goal of a paycheque. Third, what you see if what you get. I have no airs, no “image” to protect. I’m a middle aged professional who finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up at the age of 38, who is also a wife and mother, who has good days and bad. And I haven’t grown up - and there are no immediate plans to that end either!
